About Nyerere National Park

Welcome to Nyerere National Park, Hosted by Kili Glacious Tours

Nyerere National Park, located in southeastern Tanzania, is one of the largest and most beautiful national parks in Africa. It spans an incredible 30,893 square kilometers, making it the largest national park on the continent. Once part of the Selous Game Reserve, the park was upgraded in 2019 and is now a vital sanctuary for wildlife and conservation. The park is named in honor of Tanzania's first president, Julius Nyerere, who played a pivotal role in wildlife protection and environmental conservation in the country.

The park is known for its pristine wilderness, offering a range of habitats, including open grasslands, Miombo woodlands, swamps, and riverine forests. The mighty Rufiji River, which flows through the park and into the Indian Ocean, is a central feature of the ecosystem, creating an ideal environment for various species of wildlife.

Nyerere National Park is home to some of the most spectacular wildlife in Africa. Here, you'll find large populations of buffaloes, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and more. The park also serves as a sanctuary for the endangered African wild dog, a rare sight in other parts of the continent. Other wildlife includes lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and a wealth of bird species, with over 440 species recorded.

Visitors to Nyerere National Park can enjoy a variety of activities, including game drives, boat safaris, and walking safaris, offering a truly immersive experience in nature. The park is best visited between June and October when the weather is more favorable for wildlife viewing. However, it's important to note that during the rainy season (March to May), some areas of the park may be inaccessible due to poor road conditions.
